In this conversation, ethnobotanists Nancy Turner and Leigh Joseph (Squamish First Nation) will discuss the role of values in Indigenous knowledge systems and how these values guide cultural interrelationships with medicinal plants. Turner will discuss her work exploring ways ways to integrate Indigenous knowledge with western science, the differences between these systems, and how to ensure exchanges of knowledge occur within a context of respect and reciprocity. Joseph will talk about her community-based research and work focused on revitalizing cultural plant practices and knowledge as a way to contribute to cultural resurgence in collaboration with the Indigenous communities with whom she works.
