We celebrate the establishment of the Alto Calima  Regional District of Integrated Management in Colombia’s Valle del Cauca on May 27th, 2024, safeguarding 44,982 acres (18,204 hectares) of biodiverse ecosystems at the confluence of the Colombian Andes and Pacific.

The conservation area protects hundreds of species of birds, plants, mammals, fish, and butterflies. Notable bird species include the Cauca Guan (Penelope perspicax), Olive Finch (Arremon castaneiceps), and the Multicolored Tanager (Chlorochrysa nitidissima).

Yúber García, a representative of the Trópico Foundation celebrated the area’s establishment and mentioned that the establishment “has been a broad process of community and social participation, made possible by the leading action of the municipality’s communities and the Environmental Authority [Regional Autonomous Corporation of Valle del Cauca]. It has been very gratifying to have been able to support this through a great alliance with Conserva Aves, Andes Amazon Fund, and Rainforest Trust!”

Acknowledgements:

The expansion of the Regional District of Integrated Management was accomplished thanks to the Corporación Autónoma Regional del Valle del Cauca with the financial support of Conserva Aves, Andes Amazon Fund (via the Wyss Foundation and Art Into Acres), and Rainforest Trust.
