We are excited to share the news of the establishment on July 26, 2026, of the Tijae–Río Nieva Protection Forest in Amazonas, Peru spanning 74,175 acres (30,017 hectares). This biodiverse landscape of montane and cloud forest has been upgraded from a temporary “Reserved Zone” to a permanent national-level Protected Area.
The Tijae–Río Nieva Protection Forest conserves headwaters that contribute to the Nieva and Marañón River basins, maintaining essential ecosystem services for over 10,000 inhabitants, including local Awajún Indigenous communities. Additionally, it safeguards habitat for 618 bird species, 72 mammals, 99 amphibians and reptiles and creates an ecological corridor with the Alto Mayo Protection Forest.
The area serves as a habitat for the Andean Bear (Tremarctos ornatus) and the Critically Endangered yellow-tailed woolly monkey (Lagothrix flavicauda), a species endemic to Peru whose population is threatened due to rapid habitat loss from deforestation, poaching, and smuggling.
